Sheet cakes

I like baking sheet cakes, not because of their size necessarily, but because of their decorating area. Like a painter, I like the larger canvas size to create. To that end, this weekends delight showcases a number of different mediums to make this Welcome to Atlanta cake.

My client wasn't specific, except to tell me the name of the family and the colors of black and white, which furthers my creative license. The cake is a simple lemon, perfect accompaniment to a summer afternoon in "the A". The icing is a tangy lemon cream but tinted more towards a white appearance. I decided to make an edible image of our iconic Atlanta skyline, but I put it in silhouette so that it would be black.

My handwriting/ cake writing isn't what I would consider pretty enough for cakes, so my love affair with my fondant cutter continues. I took the time to find a pretty script and made my words and set them aside to dry.

I can't wait to put all of my components on my cake in time for my client to enjoy. Here are interim pics...

A finished cake :)

Welcome

Welcome to AKAkery...  my blog chronicling my adventures in cake baking.

First an explanation of the name.  I'm an AKA, I'm always going to represent in some (always not so) subtle way.  I've taken liberties in renaming both "bakery" and "cake" so allow me this English indiscretion.

Now to my cakes.  First I should say that my "sister" and I own CyntSational Productions.  We are a full service event planning, catering and design business.  I take nothing from my sister's expertise in cake, but I like to make cakes too so we diverge in this area to some degree.  I don't make carrot cake for instance, because hers can't be beat!!!  If you order a carrot cake- it will be hers you'll get and I promise immense enjoyment!

For my first blog post, I'll simply post a picture of a joint shower cake for a recent bride and groom. (June 13, 2012).  The colors of the wedding were pink and white with black accents.  The bride loves key lime cake, and her groom loves chocolate cake (We'll talk about his style of chocolate cake in a later blog post I promise).  As you can see the cakes are decorated to reflect the wedding colors.
